Leopoldo Larry Herrera

Albuquerque, New Mexico

Leopoldo Larry Herrera, 81, passed away early Saturday morning, July 22, 2023, at Lovelace Medical Center in Albuquerque, NM with his wife, Esther, by his side and had last precious moments with family and friends.  Larry was born to Miguel “Mike” and Matilde “Tillie” in Las Vegas, NM on December 15, 1941.  Larry is survived by his wife, Esther of Albuquerque, sister, Carmen Olivas of Las Cruces, NM, daughter, Celeste Carpenter (Rick) of Denver, CO, son, Paul Herrera (Brandon) of Fresno, CA, and daughter Beth DeFranco (Tony) of Danville, CA, as well as many beloved grandchildren, nephews, nieces, stepchildren, half-siblings, and cousins.  Larry was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Marie Torma of Albuquerque, and Gloria Salas of Montezuma, NM, and baby brother, Johnny Herrera.

Larry proudly served in the United States Army from 1960 to 1966, worked for Peter Paul Candy Manufacturing Company in Oakland and Salinas, CA, then became a police officer and served for the Salinas Police Department until he medically retired in 1984.  After retirement he started his own Private Investigation business until he fully retired in 2003.

Larry loved spending time with family and friends, sharing stories, and was known for speaking his mind and having a great sense of humor.  He enjoyed praying and attending Mass with his wife, playing the lottery and watching horse races.  He also served as a 4th degree Knight of Columbus, was a proud member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War.

Larry’s family will host a rosary and viewing at the Trujillo Family Funeral Home in SE Albuquerque on Sunday, July 30, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  Mass will be at St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church in NW Albuquerque on Monday, July 31, 2023, at 10:30 a.m., and he will be laid to rest at the Santa Fe National Cemetery on Monday, July 31, 2023, sharply at 2:00 p.m.
