Lawrence “Larry” Clemens Brose, 83 years old, was born in 1941, in Walker,
Minnesota, and died July 14, 2025, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Larry’s family moved to various places in Minnesota during his childhood: Minneapolis,
Hart, Osseo, and Truman. In each place, Larry attended the Lutheran school and was
taught mainly by his father. Their final move was to Denver, Colorado, where Larry
attended Denver Lutheran High School. He excelled at playing football and loved
scoring touchdowns. One of his favorite childhood memories was ice fishing with his
father in northern Minnesota.
Larry graduated from Concordia Teachers College, River Forest, IL, with a BA in
Education in 1964. In 1970, Larry received a master’s degree in Elementary
Administration from Western Washington University. Larry met Mary in 1967 at a
teachers’ conference. Larry and Mary were married in Tacoma, Washington, in 1968.
They enjoyed almost 57 years of marriage and had two children, Marla and Eric.
Memories of Larry as Dad: Dad would read to us regularly after dinner until he
eventually would fall asleep. We loved fishing with dad on the piers in Galveston. Dad
had a baby blue VW bug, used by Marla and Eric to learn to drive. On the east end of
Galveston Island, he liked to drive it on the sloped parts of the seawall. Mom said it was
peculiar. Dad was Marla and Eric’s fifth and sixth grade teacher. Every day before
dismissal, we sang “Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow” with gusto. Dad
enjoyed watching the NFL, especially the Houston Oilers.
Larry was an exercise enthusiast his whole life. His mother told of Larry running around
his house several times after coming home from school each day. During their first year
of marriage, Larry had Mary joining him in a military-style exercise program. In Texas,
Larry ran every morning and was once photographed running with Eric by a newspaper
photographer. The photo was published in the local paper. In Seattle, Larry commuted
12 miles on bicycle from his home on the east side of Lake Washington to a school in
Seattle. In retirement, every Tuesday, he climbed Badger Mountain with his faithful
companion, Albie, a Scottish terrier mix.
Larry followed in his father’s footsteps to become a Lutheran school teacher. He was
also a dedicated administrator. He had a career in Christian education as a principal
and elementary school teacher. Larry touched the lives of countless young people as an
educator, while sharing and modeling his Christian faith.
Retirement years were enjoyed in eastern Washington, where he volunteered with
Meals-On-Wheels. Larry and Mary moved to Albuquerque in 2020, to be closer to
Marla’s family. Larry and Mary enjoyed traveling throughout the US, Europe, China,
Russia, the Holy Land, and recently, to the Panama Canal.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, his younger brother Stephen, and his older
brother Lee. He is survived by his wife Mary, his daughter Marla, her partner Adam, his
son Eric, daughter-in-law Heidi, and two grandchildren.
