Listen to Obituary

Jose Bonifocio “Boni” Benavidez, age 89, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, passed away at his home on March 29, 2026, in the early morning hours, just five weeks shy of his 90th birthday. He was born on May 3, 1936, in Greeley, Colorado, to John Cristoval Benavidez and Maria Anne Benavidez (Arguello).

On his final day, Jose spent his time doing what he loved most—living life to the fullest. He enjoyed a day out at the casino, dressed sharp as always, playing roulette, and sharing a wonderful meal of steak, lobster, and scallops. He spent his time exactly how he enjoyed—laughing, playing, and making the most of the day. He returned home, cared for the dogs he loved, and later passed in the home he had built his life in and cherished for decades. He passed on Palm Sunday, a day that brought comfort to those who loved him.

Jose proudly served his country in the United States Air Force as a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam eras, including service overseas. He later worked as military police. He was a strong, proud, and wise man who carried himself with quiet strength and dignity. Known for his calm and steady nature, he rarely raised his voice, but his presence commanded deep respect. He always had a smile on his face and was known for his quiet confidence and strong presence.

He shared a beautiful and lasting love with his wife, Eloisa Carmen Benavidez (Gallegos). After returning to the United States from his military service, he married the love of his life. Their love story began when he met her at the Belen fiestas in New Mexico, where her sisters insisted on joining them—so he took them all out for hamburgers before ever getting time alone with her. They were married for over 60 years and built a life centered around family. Eloisa preceded him in death in June 2025. Their bond was unwavering, and he never spent a birthday without her; she was by his side for his last.

Jose was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who played a central role in raising his family. He shared a deep and special bond with his son Frank Benavidez Sr., and together they raised their children and grandchildren in one home. The family lived as one close unit, and Jose helped raise his grandchildren as his own, creating a home where generations lived side by side, always close, always together. To many of his grandchildren, he was not only a grandfather but a second father.

He is preceded in death by his son Edward Benavidez; and siblings Antonia Mitchell, Joseph R. Benavidez, and John “Johnny Spider” Benavidez.

He is survived by his children Frank Benavidez Sr., Tommy Benavidez, Gloria Baca, and Rita Montoya; his sisters Rosie Martinez and Florinda Benavidez; along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, too numerous to name.

Among those he helped raise as his own children are his grandchildren Desiree Benavidez Lopez and her husband Raymond Lopez, Felicia Benavidez, and Franky Benavidez Jr. He shared a special bond with his great-granddaughters Monique Benavidez and Makayla Benavidez, whom he and his wife helped raise as their own.

He is also survived by his grandchildren Ezequiel “Zeke” Benavidez, Isaiah Gallegos, and Aaliyah Benavidez.

He is also survived by additional grandchildren Anthony Montoya, Julian Montoya, Sherice Montoya, Vanessa Baca, and Alfonso Baca. He was preceded in death by his grandson Jordan Baca.

Jose loved the outdoors and lived a hands-on life. He enjoyed gardening, especially growing cucumbers, along with chili, tomatoes, and zucchini. He raised animals and took pride in providing for his family. He loved hunting, camping, playing horseshoes, and spending time outside.

He also enjoyed life’s simple pleasures. He loved going to the casino, playing roulette, and betting on the horses. He loved having big gatherings, bringing family and friends together, enjoying good food, drinks, conversation, and listening to his Spanish music. He was a very lucky man who truly enjoyed life.

He was a proud man who loved his country and enjoyed staying informed, often watching the news and spending time talking about politics, as well as sharing his thoughts on topics like aliens and evolution.

He also took great pride in his appearance. He was a flashy, handsome man who loved to dress well, often wearing his bolo ties, western hats, belt buckles, and gold jewelry.

He will be deeply missed, but he lived his life to the fullest. He is now in the hands of God, reunited with his beloved wife and other family members who have gone before him.

Family and friends are invited to join in honoring and celebrating Jose’s life.
