James Rudolph Armijo

November 11, 1937 — May 18, 2025

Albuquerque, New Mexico

James "Rudy" Armijo, 87, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 18, 2025, surrounded by loving family.

Rudy was born in Sabinal, New Mexico, on November 11, 1937, and grew up in Clovis, New Mexico. After graduating from high school, he moved to Albuquerque to study chemistry at the College of St. Joseph's on the Rio Grande. Following his graduation, Rudy worked as a chemist at Sandia National Laboratory for 34 years and was the holder of many patents.

While attending the College of St. Joseph's, Rudy met the love of his life, Mary Monnet, whom he married on June 7, 1965. They celebrated 60 years of marriage and had three children.

Rudy will be remembered for his outgoing personality and ability to make friends wherever he went. He had a strong sense of humor and loved to tell jokes. He was involved in his church community, where he was, among other things, a Eucharistic minister, lector, choir member, and ACTS Retreat leader. He was an active member of the Cursillo Movement and founded the Leader's School in the Diocese. He was also involved in his neighborhood community and was instrumental in the construction of the Olympic pool at the West Mesa Aquatic Center.

Rudy had a lifelong love of learning, which led him to seek deeper scientific truths through his work and deeper truths about God through his devotion to and study of the Bible. He enjoyed reading (especially National Geographic), fishing, and attending "his little sweethearts"" swim meets and softball games.

Rudy is survived by his wife, Mary; his daughter, Teresa Stover and her husband Bobby; his two sons, James Armijo and Paul Armijo; his two grandchildren, Simone Stover and Monet Stover; and his brother, Manuel Armijo and his wife Ann. He is preceded in death by his father, Manuel; his mother, Manuela; and his three sisters, Esther, Doris, and Tercilla.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be given to Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 5415 Fortuna Rd NW, Albuquerque, NM 87105.
