Heula Mitcham
Pittman
June 24, 1943 – April 30, 2026
HEULA MITCHAM PITTMAN passed away on April 30, 2026 at age 82 years. She was born in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1943, daughter of Eula Pigott and Hubert Mitcham. At age seven she contracted polio and her treatment included months in an iron lung, surgeries to ankle and knee, and the need for crutches and special shoes with heavy metal braces.
By age twelve medical science of the time had done all it could do. She finished high school, attended college at Northwestern State College, Natchitoches, Louisiana, and was employed by the City of Pineville for a time. She married and raised three daughters. When times were bad she started a child care business in her home in Baton Rouge. She came to Albuquerque in 1990 where she married Jim Pittman. Over many years she suffered the progressive pain and weakness effects of post-polio syndrome and in 2017 was diagnosed with eosinophilic pneumonia, a condition treated with prednisone. She and her husband were active in a car club: Corvairs of New Mexico. Other interests included Cooking, Crafts, Music, Piano, Organ, Choral singing, Child Care Teaching and Travel in the Southwest.
In lieu of flowers, consider donations to Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation Inc.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the caring and compassionate professionals at
