Ernest Torres

July 20, 1936 — March 30, 2024

Ernest “Ernie” “Wero” Torres, 87, went home to be with his wife Margie Torres on Saturday, March 30, 2024. Ernest was predeceased by his parents Lorenzo and Clara Torres. A lifelong resident of Albuquerque, Ernest was a true family man who cared deeply for his wife, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and extended family. As a meatcutter, he spent many years working in the grocery business around Albuquerque. He knew someone wherever he went; he was known around town as a person who was always there to help others. Ernie always had a story to tell; he shared about the good old days and all of his many trips. Ernie was first and foremost a committed family man. Providing for his wife and children was his biggest goal. He worked long hours in the grocery stores and spent evenings and weekends cutting meat in his garage so that Margie did not need to work outside of the house and their children had everything they needed. The front door to his home was always open; he loved having people over. Ernie hosted many family get-togethers throughout the years. He enjoyed grilling in the backyard and having conversations with family and friends around the bar in the den. Ernie loved playing with his grandchildren. He and Margie traveled to Dallas often to see Adam and Kristian play sports and he spent many afternoons at the dojo or golf course with Justin. Ernest was also a tireless caregiver for his wife Margie throughout the years, providing compassionate, selfless care as her illness progressed. Ernest was a loving man who cared deeply for his family and friends. Wero was always telling friends and family that they “needed to get up and go before the get up and go is gone” and “to never get old.” He embodied this throughout his life. From day trips to the Jemez to fishing adventures in Mexico, he was always on the go. He made sure that a packed bag was always in the car in case an afternoon drive with the family turned into a long weekend trip. On the last day of school, he would give Jerry and Leola’s teachers an envelope for them to send report cards home since he would be picking them up in the mini motorhome and they would be hours away from Albuquerque by nightfall. No trip was too big or too small for Ernie. He enjoyed hunting, visiting family and friends in other states, exploring the great outdoors in Yellowstone, and learning about different cultures by visiting museums in cities across the country. In a true mark of his dedication to his work and his love of traveling, Ernie always made a point of visiting a local grocery store in each town he visited so he could learn how others were merchandizing and he brought those ideas back, leading to the success of his meat departments. In recent years, he enjoyed taking day trips and long journeys with Leola. He also enjoyed traveling from his armchair, reading the newspaper cover-to-cover each day and eagerly awaiting the newest Time Magazine to arrive in the mail. Ernie never lost his “get up and go.” Ernest was welcomed into his eternal home by his parents Lorenzo and Clara Torres, his wife of
58 years Margie Torres, many of his brothers and sisters, and his great grandchildren Andre and Abigail
Sena. He is survived by his daughter Leola Sena, grandson Justin Sena and his wife Nicole, great grandson Lorenzo Sena; son Jerry Torres and his wife Brenda, grandson Adam Torres and his wife Rosa, great grandsons Joe and Alex; and granddaughter Kristian Ritter. He also leaves behind a large extended family and innumerable friends who miss him dearly. To honor a life well lived, services will be held at the Shrine of St. Bernadette on Tuesday, April 16th. The Shrine is located at 11509 Indian School Rd NE. A rosary will be prayed at 9:30 am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated at 10 am. A reception in the parish hall will follow Mass. Interment and a short graveside blessing will take place at Mt. Calvary Cemetery at 2 pm.
