Ernest "Ernie" Duran

September 11, 1951 — December 21, 2022

Ernest “Ernie” Duran 71, passed away surrounded by his family December 21,

2022 after a short illness. Ernie had a passion for music ranging from R&B,

Jazz and Rock and he applied that passion playing electric bass for many

local New Mexican bands. His bass contributions can be heard on songs

played on local New Mexican radio. He was a fantastic bass player and spent

many hours each day perfecting his craft his entire adult life. Ernie was also a

life-long power lifter. He began lifting weights while at Sandia High School

(’68) and kept lifting for over 50 years. He placed First many times in state,

regional and National AAU and NASA power lifting competitions. He was

awarded many outstanding lifter awards well into his fifties and sixties. He

retired from Albuquerque Public Schools and was an avid Dallas Cowboys

and ‘Incredible Hulk’ fan.

 

He was preceded in death by his son Ernie Jr and his parents John Sr. and

Socorro Duran. He will be greatly missed by his family, son David and wife

Jolyn, daughter Bernadette and husband Joel. His grandchildren Ernesto,

Eryana, Emilio, Delilah, D’Ondra, Davida, David Jr. Andrew, JonDavid,

Luanna and Rose (and knew him as “Grandpa Hulk”), brothers John Duran

Jr., and Tony Duran and Sister Roberta and husband Danny Gabaldon, many

nieces and nephews, best friend and fellow musician Rick Lucero and his

faithful Yorkie companion, Chico.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:00 am on Friday, January 13th, 2023, at

9:00am at Our Lady of The Most Holy Rosary Church, 5415 Fortuna Rd NW,

Albuquerque, NM 87105 with a rosary immediately following mass. A

reception will be held in the church afterwards. Interment will take place at

1:00pm at Gate of Heaven Cemetery at 7999 Wyoming Blvd. NE. 87109.
