Elmer Martinez, a lifelong resident of Truchas, New Mexico, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 30th, and went to be with the Lord.

Elmer proudly served his country for nine years in the United States Army, beginning in 1955. He completed Basic Infantry Training at Fort Ord and later trained as an Auto Mechanic and Track Vehicle Mechanic at Fort Hood, Texas. He served with the 1st Armored Division during Exercise SAGE BRUSH—the largest U.S. field training operation since World War II—and later supported the Iceland Defense Force as part of the 2nd Infantry Battalion Combat Team, helping secure vital North Atlantic sea lanes during the Cold War. He continued his service in the U.S. Army Reserve until 1964.

Elmer and his devoted wife, Flora Martinez (Trujillo), were blessed with 45 years of marriage. Together, they faithfully served in ministry for 15 years, pouring love, guidance, and encouragement into their community.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Epimeñio and Sofronia Martinez; his beloved daughter, Yvonne Martinez; his grandson, Stephen Jr. Valencia; and his brother, Nelson (Shirley) Martinez.

Elmer is survived by his wife, Flora; his son, Elmer Martinez Jr.; and his daughters, Frieda Martinez and Yvette (Steve) Valencia. He is lovingly remembered by his grandchildren: Dominic (Theresa) Martinez, Di’Angelo (Lytisha) Martinez, Nehemiah Martinez, JoAnna Martinez, Ana Alicia Martinez, Sarah Valencia, Tatiana Martinez, and Gracie Valencia; along with 15 great-grandchildren who brought him tremendous joy. He is further survived by his sister, Lorraine (Billy) Gallegos, as well as many nieces and nephews who cherished him deeply.

Elmer will be remembered for his strong faith, his unwavering love for his family, and his lifelong roots in the Truchas community. His legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
