Eleanor Gallant was born September 23rd, 1935, at Bronx Hospital to Helen (nee Goldman) and Aaron Rosenblum. She was an only child but had many cousins. Her mother was a nurse, and her father drove a cab in New York City and sold fruit in the summer at White Lake, New York. She attended grade school at PS 90 and graduated from William Howard Taft High School in 1952. She attended City College of New York for her bachelor’s degree in psychology and master’s degree in early childhood development. While at CCNY she met her future husband, Gerald Gallant, and once married they moved to Binghamton, New York where Gerald completed his PhD in English Literature. Their only son, Dion, was born in Binghamton in 1969. They then moved to Grand Forks North Dakota for work. Bad weather and bad times led to divorce and Eleanor and Dion set out for Gallup, New Mexico in 1976. After two years teaching on the Navajo reservation, she and Dion moved to Albuquerque where she lived for the next ten years before moving to the San Fernando Valley to be near her cousins. She returned to New Mexico in 2000 to help care for her granddaughter Sophie and her grandson Theo. In later life she was busy with many clubs, attending TOPS (Taking off pounds sensibly), Spiritual Club, East Mountain Historical Society, Vintage Players, Ma Jong and others. She also took up jewelry making and became quite accomplished. She leaves behind her son and daughter-in-law Dion Gallant and Kara Peterson, her grandchildren Sophie and Theo along with innumerable friends. In her final days she said she was grateful for a life of friendships and adventure. She was loved by many and will be dearly missed.
