Edward Johnson, Jr. of Albuquerque, NM, passed away at his home on January 29, 2026. He was a beloved and cherished father, grandfather, brother, friend, neighbor and parishioner.
He was born on July 15, 1947 in Randolph, AZ to Rosa Hickman and Edward Johnson, Sr. Edward was the oldest of 14 living children. Known as “Sonny” to his family, Ed lived in Randolph and then Coolidge, AZ and graduated from the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ with a degree in political science.
After graduation he joined the Navy as an officer and served 3 years overseas in the Mediterranean. He then served as a Lieutenant Recruitment officer for 2 years, which brought him to Albuquerque, NM.
He then spent the majority of his career working in sales for Mountain Bell / US West before retiring in the late 1990s.
Over the years, he was an active member of several churches in Albuquerque before finding his spiritual home at All Saints of North America Orthodox Church. It was one of the great joys of his life serving as a cantor and choir member of that congregation.
Ed loved music and especially loved to sing, performing with various choral groups in the Albuquerque area including the ABQ symphony and the De Profundis men's Acapella ensemble.
He is survived by his two sons, Brandon (Denise) Johnson of Albuquerque, NM, Ryan (Kathy) Johnson of Gettysburg, PA; four grandchildren, Zoe, Atticus, Charlotte and Adam Johnson; four sisters, Shirley Jackson of El Centro, Brenda Robinson of Flint, Mich., Gwendolyn Johnson of Tucson, Ariz., Gina Byrd of Atlanta; five brothers, Willie Johnson of Albuquerque, Johnny Johnson of Mesa, Ariz., Wayne Johnson of Casa Grande, Ariz., Donnie Johnson of Salina, Kan., and Jonathan Johnson of Tucson, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and five brothers.
A funeral service will be held at 1:30 pm on Monday, February 2, at All Saints of North America Church, Albuquerque NM, to be followed by a community meal. Burial will be at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to All Saints of North America Orthodox Church Endowment Fund in his memory.
