Ruben J. Barela, One Hundred and One years ago, Deacon Ruben J. Barela was born to Mariano and Candelaria Marie Garcia Barela in Ranchos De Albuquerque. He shared this honor with his twin brother Edward. His other siblings were Arturo, Mary, Amanda, Edwina, and Alfonso. All have preceded him in death.
He served in the Army during World War II. He was recognized for valor under combat, receiving the Bronze Star.
He married Consuelo M. Parra upon returning from the war. Of his children, he is survived by Catherine P. Barela (Belen), Paul A. Barela (Sandra T.; Rio Rancho), Therese M. Barela C’deBaca (Leroy; Rio Rancho), Stephen G. Barela (Albuquerque) and 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, as well as 3 great-great grandchildren. He suffered the loss of his wife and his children Dominic J. Barela, Susan D. Barela Heinz Nordrum, and Louis M. Barela.
He was an active local business owner providing custom draperies for over 20 years. Beginning in 1986, he focused upon serving the parishioners of Queen of Heaven parish both as a Carmelite and Deacon. He relinquished his earthly duties on April 16, 2025.
