Abie Sonny Montoya

Abie Montoya, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, NM, passed away at the age of 71, on Saturday, July 5, 2025. He was born on September 16, 1953, in Albuquerque, to Leo and Tommie Montoya. Abie attended Albuquerque High School and briefly worked for the City of Albuquerque. He spent most of his life flipping cars of all types and even ran a couple Ice Cream Trucks in the 90’s. He was married to his teenage love, Pat Montoya, for 52 years. They have two children, a son, Gilbert (Pajaro) Montoya, wife Angie Montoya, their children Seth, and Dominique. A daughter, Diamond Leyba, husband Joel Leyba, grandchildren Sariah & Leo Leyba. And his beloved chihuahua, Cindy, who went everywhere with him. Siblings, Sandy Mondragon, Betty Wheat, Kathy Romero, Larry Montoya. Godson, Gerald Lucero III. Nephews who were close to him, Thomas Rael and Gavin Lucero. He is loved by many more family members and friends who will miss him dearly. He is preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Tommie Montoya, his brother Squirrel Montoya, his brother Danny Montoya and his best friend Gilbert Baldonado. He is known by many for his passion for classic cars, that he loved to cruise Central and Old Town. Abie had a fun, outgoing personality that left a lasting impression on all who met him. He was the ice cream man, a salesman, swap meet promoter, car show enthusiast, a cruiser, and most importantly a family man. Abie wassure to make you laugh every time he was around. A rosary for Abie will be held on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at 11:00 in the morning at Trujillo Family Funeral Home, 110 Alvarado Dr SE, Albuquerque, NM 87108. Following the rosary, he will be laid to rest at San Jose de Armijo Cemetery, 2957 Arenal Rd SW, Albuquerque, NM 87121. Pallbearers for Abie are Gerald Lucero III, Gavin Lucero, Thomas Rael, Seth Castillo, Steve Jones, and Joe Arredondo. Lowriders and classic cars are encouraged to join us for Abie’s last cruise. Reception will be at 4:00 in the afternoon at the American Legion Post 13, 1201 Legion Rd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87102.
